One Day is the story of the friendship between Emma and Dexter, beginning on July 15, 1988, when they are two young adults fresh out of university. With each chapter occurring exactly one year later, the reader is offered a glimpse of how their friendship, lives and careers progress, with and without each other. A friend once pointed this book out to me because the significant date in this book, July 15, is also an important date in my family (i.e., the day my spouse and I first met, as well as our wedding anniversary). I finally picked it up for a read after seeing it cross my path at the library one too many times. It was a bit of a struggle at times to identify with either of them -- Dexter spends a good portion of the book being a fairly unlikable guy, and they both suffer from poor judgment to the extent that I frequently found myself desiring to shake them and shout, "No! Stop! What are you doing?!" Overall, an OK read.
