Excellent, inventive thriller by an author who is new to me; I will definitely read more of his work. The Woodcutter is a tale of betrayal and vengeance complete with fairy tale motifs (princess; worthy peasant who is set three tasks in order to win princess; major character a psychiatrist whose nickname is Elf...)that are subtly and creatively employed. The NY Times reviewer described it as Jacobean, which I think fits.
