Hand this one to any animals lovers out there. But warn them. This often funny, seemingly simple story has plenty of emotional gut-punches. I felt sick to my stomach with sadness while reading some sections, especially when Ivan starts to remember the early trauma he suffered while being stolen away from his jungle family, and his plain-spoken yet punched-gut realizations that if he doesn't help Ruby--his new baby elephant neighbor at the Mall where they're both captive--she will face the same dull lifetime of loneliness he has endured.
