Jepp, born with dwarfism, has been raised in the warmth of his mother's love surrounded by the protection of his small Dutch village and its townspeople. When he is fourteen however, an opportunity to expand his horizons arrives in the form of an offer to become a Court Jester at the court of the Spanish Infanta. At his mother's insistence, Jepp goes, only to find himself imprisoned there with other dwarves, who although spoiled with good food and fine clothes, are stripped of a both freedom and dignity. When Jepp tries to help one of his companions escape, the second part of his adventure begins to unfold in very unexpected ways.
