Why Grow Up?

Subversive Thoughts for An Infantile Age

If you're looking for an accessible introduction to the heavyweights of the Enlightenment -- Rousseau and Kant, but with a generous helping of Hume -- written by a contemporary thinker whose politics are unassailable as far as I can tell, check out Susan Neiman's WHY GROW UP? We've lost our way. And what Neiman suggests, as many who have come before her, is that we must go "Back to Kant!" I agree. Unlike Marx, Hegel or even Nietzsche, Kant thought history was forever open and undetermined. It is us up to us to do what we can to bring our ideals to bear. The process is uncertain and painful. But we must try.
