The Ways of the World --- by --- Robert Goddard, In this thrilling novel set in post WW1 Europe, Max, a British pilot shot down behind enemy lines, is dispatched to Paris by his suspicious mother to investigate the untimely death of her husband. Apparently he died by falling from a roof; hardly the expected cause of death for a reserved, minor British diplomat. Is this a story of espionage or a story about a seedy affair gone wrong? As the story unwinds we are introduced to characters savory and otherwise; to characters suspect and otherwise; to individuals competent and otherwise. The more questions Max’s investigations answer, the more new questions are raised. The plot of this novel squirms with turns and diversions. Who can he trust? Who is not to be trusted? Hold your breath: you won’t see the answers coming. Well written, never dull, this novel rolls right along. And then, and then it ends. But it’s not over. There are two more books to this trilogy. Recommended.
