Doeden's inspiring and detailed research highlights familiar Negro League baseball stars and teams, such as Satchel Paige and the Homestead Grays, while also introducing readers to lesser known stars such as Turkey Stearns and Mule Suttles. Doeden also goes behind the scenes, telling the story of the creation of the Negro Leagues and the effect desegregation had on them after Jackie Robinson's historic debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. An excellent primer for young fans curious about this unique, if not tragic, part of American sports history.
