Ingmar Bergman doesn't need a review from me, but this is a profound and humane masterpiece. Nobody with any interest in cinema should miss seeing it. And it can be re-visited over the years without losing any of its lustre. Much like Shakespeare, The Seventh Seal is full of a humour that comes from its director's understanding of humanity. An entirely convincing vision of the Middle Ages starkly and beautifully lit by cinematographer Gunnar Fischer. A meditation on life and death wittily delivered via the motif of a game of chess. And love that may survive all travails... This is a good place to start for the newcomer to Bergman and a pure well for any Bergman addict.
