Stunning, sophisticated production that does the Masada story justice. Heroic yet ultimately tragic defense by the Jews against the Roman invasion. Masterful directing by Boris Sagal from an excellent and provocative screenplay filled with tension and drama. Rousing music though nothing special. The water scenes are priceless. The battle scenes modest yet enthralling. Acting is awe-inspiring. Peter Strauss (see him in "Jericho Mile" an earlier film of his) is perfect as Eleazer. And then there is the incomparable Peter O'Toole as Silva, who commands the screen like no one else. The voice, the facial expressions, the timing - utterly outstanding. His scenes with Barbara Carrera (also very good) are captivating. A quality drama you rarely see nowadays, more's the pity. Best line: "Stay out of politics my friend, you're too honest." Plus ca change...!
