I am neither a fan of opera or ballet but this is an amazing film. For anyone who appreciates the art of cinematography, set design, editing, and special effects The Tales of Hoffmann should not be missed. Watch it with captions on first time around so as to fully understand the narrative. Dreamlike and hypnotic, if given patience, the Tales of Hoffmann will reward repeated viewings and may in the end become a film favorite of yours as it has mine. The opening Dragonfly Ballet, the second Olympia sequence with it's emphasis on golden yellow hues plus a horrific ending , and the third Giulieeta sequence accentuating a red and black color scheme are unforgettable. Not to mention , Moira Shearer and Ludmillia Tcherina are two of the most beautiful female leads ever.
